West Bengal defeated Sports Authority of India (SAI) 2-0 in the final to emerge Champions of the Tier II Coca Cola U-16 Football Championship at the picturesque Kalyani Stadium. Avi Roy and Rahul Paswan scored one apiece in each half for the Champions.
Both West Bengal and SAI earn a promotion to the Tier I of the Tournament next year. This is the first time any SAI Team participated in any AIFF Tournament.
West Bengal dominated proceedings early and were rewarded by a goal when Avi put them ahead in the 27th minute.
A desperate SAI came back strongly and pushed Bengal on the backfoot for the rest of the half. But Bengal managed to hold on as they went into the interval with a one-goal cushion.
After resumption, SAI came back with more purpose. They launched a barrage of attacks at the Bengal goal but the rival defence held fort. On the contrary, Bengal doubled the lead off a counter-attack – Rahul curling it in off a direct free-kick.
