NARAINPUR, CHHATTISGARH: A goal by striker Subhodip Sardar in the 25th minute enabled Bengal to reach the final of the Junior Boys’ National Football Championships for Dr. BC Roy Trophy Tier 1 with a solitary goal win over Delhi at the Ramakrishna Mission ground in Narainpur, Chhattisgarh, on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

The most successful state in the history of the tournament, this was West Bengal’s 26th entry into the final. They won the trophy 17 times, finishing runners-up on other occasions.  In the final to be played on Monday, August 12, 2024, Bengal will take on Odisha.

In a keenly contested match in which neither team were ready to leave an inch, West Bengal clinched the issue in their favour in the 43rd minute off a free-kick taken from around 30 yards by Sabyasachi Dhar. As the ball rolled into the penalty area, Sardar quickly grabbed it through a jungle of legs and shot it past goalkeeper Shubham Malik.

The second half saw some intense battle with Delhi making an all-out effort to find the equaliser. Bengal, too were not far behind and made inroads, but missed chances from both sides spoiled their efforts.
