National Championships taking place in Gujarat for the first time

NEW DELHI: The 69th edition of the Santosh Trophy is up and running with all states vying for a place in the final round.

Five zones – East, West, North, South, North East – have been made with Zonals played across five venues for these five zones. The highlight among all venues has been Gujarat hosting the National Championships for the first time. All West Zone matches are being played at the Municipal Corporation Stadium in Rajkot, Gujarat.

Vajubhai Vala, Governor of Karnataka was the Chief Guest and inaugurated the championship.

In a colorful opening ceremony many prominent personalities, Government officials, former players and school children from many schools were present.

In the opening match Gujarat beat Daman & Due by 5 goals to 1. Since then Gujarat have gone on to beat Madhya Pradesh by a solitary goal while in the Zone Goa edged Maharashtra 2-1.

In North Zone Group B Haryana played out a 0-0 draw against Jammu & Kashmir while Delhi romped home to a 4-0 win over Himachal Pradesh.

In Group A Punjab made up for their goalless stalemate with a more than convincing 4-0 win. Uttarakhand trounced Chandigarh 3-0.

In the first match of the group Uttar Pradesh went down to Uttarakhand 1-2.

Ten teams wil qualify for the Final Round of which four will play the semi finals. Each Group winner from each zone, and in the case of West group winner and runners-up will make the grade.
