Chandigarh edge past Punjab to make last four of Jr Boys’ NFC for BC Roy Trophy Tier 1

NARAINPUR, CHHATTISGARH: Chandigarh booked their place in the first semi-final of the Junior Boys’ National Football Championship for the BC Roy Trophy Tier 1, defeating Punjab 1-0 in the concluding Group C match at the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Ground in Narainpur, Chhattisgarh, on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

With this, Chandigarh emerged the group champions with an all-win record, having collected nine points from three matches. Chandigarh will now face Group A winners Odisha in the first semi-final on August 3, 2024, at the same venue.

Hipjyoti Moran scored the decisive goal for Chandigarh in the 70th minute of the match.  Despite making a strong start and launching numerous attacks, Punjab could not convert the chances that came their way.

In another Group C match, Meghalaya triumphed over Karnataka with a 1-0 victory. Meghalaya’s Banteilangki Sumer (9') scored an early goal from a direct free kick. Both teams were out of contention before the start of the match.

Big wins for Lakshadweep, Assam & Arunachal Pradesh in Tier 2 

NAGAON, ASSAM: Nagaland drew 2-2 with Haryana, while Lakshadweep registered a big 6-0 win against Andaman & Nicobar in Group A matches in Tier 2 of the Junior Boys’ National Football Championship for the BC Roy Trophy at the Nurul Amin Stadium in Nagaon, Assam.

In Group C matches, Assam triumphed 4-1 against Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh registered a 5-0 victory over Andhra Pradesh.

Nagaland scored early with Ayhunlo Chung’s (8’) strike. Haryana quickly responded with a goal from Aman (21’). Aman (48’) struck again to give Haryana the lead. However, Nagaland levelled the score in the dying minutes with Thangginhao Singson’s (90+4’) goal resulting in two teams sharing points.

Meanwhile, Lakshadweep dominated against Andaman & Nicobar, scoring six goals. Mohammed Bishar (14’,15’,34’) scored a hat-trick while Nizal Hassan (69’,84’) added a brace. 

Assam won their second consecutive game with consummate ease. Skipper Kamsemlal Vaephei (13’) gave Assam the lead. The winners once again came alive in the last 10 minutes when Kamsemlal (82’), Akash Lohar (86’) and Roshan Dungdung (88) struck in quick succession. Sikkim managed one consolation goal from Nikhil Pradhan (90+5’).

Arunachal Pradesh scored five against Andhra Pradesh, starting with Gyamar Josuah’s (4’) goal. Hanu Tari (44’,47’,66’) scored a hat-trick, while Dodum Dari (86’) added a late strike to secure full points for Arunachal Pradesh.

Assam, Uttarakhand & Sikkim girls bag full points

BELGAUM, KARNATAKA: Assam defeated Telangana 3-2, and Uttarakhand secured a 2-0 victory over Punjab in the opening matches of Group C in the Junior Girls’ National Football Championship 2024-25, Tier 2, at the Sporting Planet Lovedale School Ground in Belgaum, Karnataka, on Thursday, August 1, 2024. In Group D, Sikkim defeated Madhya Pradesh 3-2.

In a thrilling five-goal encounter, Telangana’s Gottipati Sai Sameeksha (4’) opened the scoring from the penalty spot. Assam's Arti Munda equalised in the 36th minute. Telangana regained the lead with a goal from captain Vadlakonda Chaithanya Sri (45+2’). Assam’s Arti Munda (55’) struck again to level the score. An own goal by Telangana’s Manepally Moksha Tapasvi (70’) clinched the issue in favour of Assam.

In the other match, Uttarakhand claimed their first win with goals from Rani Mehta (3’) and Ayushi Negi (34’), thus securing a 2-0 victory over Punjab.

In Group D, Smeeta Sundas’s fine hat-trick (26’,68’,69’) was the highlight of Sikkim’s narrow win. Madhya Pradesh threatened to make a late comeback scoring twice through Tejaswini Maravi (84’) and Saniya Bahroliya (90+3’) but that was all they could do.
