West Bengal, Karnataka win in Sr Women’s NFC for Rajmata Jijabai Trophy

NADIA, WEST BENGAL: Hosts West Bengal and Karnataka grabbed full points in their opening Group B matches of the Senior Women’s National Football Championship for the Rajmata Jijabai Trophy at the DL Roy District Stadium on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

In the day’s first match, West Bengal scored once in each half to overcome the challenge of Bihar 2-0. International Mousumi Murmu came good with her firepower scoring once in each half.

Later in the evening, Karnataka ran riot with their goalscoring prowess as they massacred Jammu and Kashmir 13-0. While Tanusree Roy Hema Mundi scored a hat-trick each equally dividing six goals among them, Aarushi Santosh (2), Anaya Susan Thomas, Rivka Ramji, Afreen Peerbhoy, Maitreyi Palasamudram and Tanvi Nair were the other scorers.

Narrow win for Jharkhand

SILIGURI, WEST BENGAL: In the Group H opener, Jharkhand edged Mizoram by a solitary goal at the Kanchenjunga Stadium.

After a barren first half, Sunita Munda scored the only goal of the match in the 59th minute when she received a ball from the right. Her shot didn’t carry too much power, but it trickled into the goal to fetch full points for Jharkhand.  

Goals galore in Anantapur

ANANTAPUR, ANDHRA PRADESH: Strong contenders Odisha and Arunachal Pradesh registered easy wins as the matches in Group F started at the RDT Stadium.  

Odisha found it easy against Ladakh and won 7-0. Pyari Xaxa (2), Subhadra Sahoo (2), Malati Munda, Manisha Naik and Deepa Nayak scored for the winners, who led 4-0 at half time.

Arunachal did even better in the second match as they hammered Madhya Pradesh 8-0 with Giani Ramching Mara alone accounting for three goals. Gunailu Tawsik (2), Ani Tayang (2) and Kai Rumi were other goalscorers for Arunachal, who led 3-0 at the breather.
