NEW DELHI: The Indian U-17 World Cup Squad were held to a 1-1 stalemate by NorthEast XI at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati today (January 29, 2016).
The Indian colts started the game on an attacking note and two minutes into the match, Amarjit, was awarded with an opportunity to open the goal scoring tally of the Indian colts, but his shot could only earn a corner kick.
Six minutes later, Amarjit once again popped up, clear of the defensive mix, only for the NorthEast XI custodian to deny him the joy of scoring with a strong right hand.
Perhaps the best opportunity of the first half fell to Suresh in the 18th minute, when Aniket released him onto goal with a delightful through ball. Suresh failed to round the opponent goalkeeper up and the chance went abegging.
Four minutes later, Sanjeev’s peach of a free-kick nearly rattled the bar, as the Indian Colts upped their attacking ante. However, NorthEast XI stood up to the challenge posed by the Indian Colts and the half-time scoreline read 0-0.
Changing over and the match boiled down into a battle for possession as both Teams entwined in crafty play. However, in the 73rd minute, a Sanjeev shot earned a top draw save from the NorthEast XI custodian.
Shortly after, NorthEast XI took the lead against the run of play as the score-line reflected 1-0. After much bidding, the Indian Colts finally breached the NorthEast XI citadel and scored to equalize their deficit in the 82nd minute as Abhijeet Sarkar blasted his opportunity home to make it 1-1.
Although the Indian Colts pressed for the winning goal, but opportunities went abegging as the full-time scoreline read 1-1.
