NEW DELHI: Sporting Clube de Goa completed a historic double after overpowering Dempo 3-1 in Goa Football Federation’s (GFA) Knock out Cup Final at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Thursday (May 1, 2014), the club informed in a statement.
After Dempo had taken the lead through Romeo Fernandes, Sporting Goa put together a brilliant second half display in which they scored three goals in a blistering seven minute spell to secure the victory.
Boima Karpeh, Ogba kalu and Beevan D’Mello got on the scoresheet for the Flaming Oranje.
Sporting Goa had the greater chances in the first half, but was kept out by the heroics of the Dempo custodian and Captain Subhashish Chowdhury.
Ogba Kalu went the closest to scoring on the half hour mark from a one-on-one chance, but his effort was saved. Two minutes later it was Dempo who took the lead through the young Romeo.
Changing over, Sporting Goa was resilient in their mission and finally made headway, when Dempo defender Selwyn Fernandes handled the ball in the penalty area. From the resulting spot kick Subhashish Chowdhury produced a wonderful save to deny Ogba Kalu.
Two minutes later in a similar position, Selwyn Fernandes handled the ball yet again. This time Boima Jerry Karpeh stepped up to net his 28th goal in all competitions for Sporting Goa.
From this moment on, Sporting Goa piled on the pressure and took the lead through Kalu who calmly slotted the ball into the far corner, after Beevan’s shot was charged down by Selwyn.
With eleven minutes left on the clock, Sporting Goa’s Beevan sliced the ball into the roof of the net, after Dempo failed to clear from a corner.
After the match Sporting Goa were presented the GFA knockout Cup and also the Airtel Goa Pro League which was won earlier in the season.
“This victory is dedicated to the fans who have turned up to support us this season. We have a talented group and I can promise you there is plenty more to come next season,” signed off Sporting Goa Coach Oscar Bruzon.
