MANJERI: Sporting Clube de Goa dashed East Bengal’s dim hopes of making to the semifinals of the 35
th Federation Cup when they beat Rangdajied United 2-0 in their Group B match here at the MDSC Stadium in Manjeri on Tuesday (January 21, 2014).
Boima Karpeh and India International Victorino Fernandes scored second half goals to secure the win for Oscar Bruzon’s Sporting Clube.
It was end to end stuff from the first whistle. In the 9
th minute, Rangdajied United’s David Nghaihte sent in a teasing cross inside the box only for DPR Korea’s Kim Song Yong to head wide.
In the next minute, Edmar Figueira’s drop header looped over the crosspiece after Thomas Saikhom floated in a delightful cross from the left.
At the other end, Sporting Clube’s Ogba Kalu Nnanna’s effort from just outside the box went inches wide.
While there was lot of action in the final third for both the teams, the midfield belonged to none as both outfits struggled to stitch together a string of passes losing possession quite cheaply on numerous occasions.

Post the breather, Sporting took the game by the scruff of the neck raiding the rival citadel with a flurry of attacks. Of one such move, Boima Karpeh caught goalkeeper Surjay Pariyar off his line to expertly dink over the latter. Karpeh picked up the ball on the edge of the area after Rowlin Borges had set him up. The ball nicely nestled into the bottom far corner.
Substitute Victorino Fernandes cushioned their lead in the 70
th minute when he slalomed down the middle of the park making the most of some lax defending from Rangdajied United and smashed home beating an onrushing Pariyar.
