Neila, Almeida claim Sporting Clube Awards

NEW DELHI: Tough tackling Spanish defender Gonzalo Neila was voted Sporting Clube de Goa’s ‘Player of the Season,’ while right back Keenan Almeida lifted the Sporting Clube de Goa ‘Young Player of the Season’ Award, at a Hotel in Panjim,  Press Release from the Club informed.

The Awards were part of a lunch to celebrate a successful season for the Flaming Oranje where they finished as Airtel Goa Pro League Champions and Goa Knock out Cup winners, while the juniors won the GFA U-14 1st division League title.

At the national level Sporting Goa finished a respectable fifth in the Airtel I-League and also was runners-up in the Federation Cup.

The Awards were voted for by the Sporting Goa Senior squad. The ‘Young Player of the Season’ Award was open to all U-23 Players in the Team.

Last season, Midfielder Pratesh Shirodkar had won the SCG ‘Player of the Year’ Award, while winger Stephene Barreto had lifted the SCG “Young Player of the Year’ Trophy.

SCG ‘Player of the Year’ Gonzalo had a fantastic debut season where he was like rock in the defence and ever dependable with his perfectly timed tackles.

SCG ‘Young Player of the Year’ Keenan had a consistent year and won many admirers after he continued playing matches despite having a fractured finger.

Sporting Goa CEO Mr. Victor Fernandes compeered the Awards ceremony and was assisted by Mr. Clyde Dias.

“The Awards are given to reward and recognise the achievements of our Players. They are for the Players, voted by the Players which is always exciting,” stated Victor.

Earlier in the day, the Sporting Goa squad played out a dramatic Table Football World Cup, in which Beevan D’Mello and Keenan Almeida triumphed in the Final.

This Event was far from the glamorous gala Award ceremonies Indian Football has become accustomed to, but it was done the Sporting Goa Way, with a group of lads who simply love spending time together bonding as a Team which has been their mantra this season.
