KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan Super Giant pipped their arch-rivals East Bengal FC 2-0 in the high-octane Kolkata Derby in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 campaign at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant controlled the tempo of the match from start to finish, as a goal each from Jamie Maclaren and Dimitrios Petratos in either half was enough for Jose Molina’s men to secure their eighth win against the Red and Gold Brigade in ISL.
The players took their time to settle into the electrifying atmosphere of 60,000 odd fans buzzing at the stadium. The Mariners maintained a high momentum and their relentless attacks finally bore fruit in the 41st minute when Manvir Singh with a sensational cross found Maclaren in space. The Australian tucked it past Prabhsukhan Gill to hand Mohun Bagan Super Giant the lead.
The 31-year-old didn’t disappoint his fans as he earned a crucial penalty in the 89th minute following a reckless tackle from Gill. Petratos made no mistake from the spot to double the lead for the Mariners. Eventually, the two goals were enough for Molina’s men to hold the fort for the last few minutes.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s Greg Stewart was adjudged the Player of the Player of the Match.
Mumbai City FC extend unbeaten streak against FC Goa
GOA: Mumbai City FC grabbed their maiden victory of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season with a 2-1 win in a closely-fought encounter against FC Goa at the Fatorda Stadium. The Islanders extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games against the Gaurs to reaffirm their upper hand in the recent history of the fixture.
Two strikes in the first half from Nikalos Karelis and Yoell van Nieff were sufficient for the Islanders as the spot-kick that Armando Sadiku converted for the home side in the second half of the game came as consolation.
Hmingthanmawia Ralte, commonly known as Valpuia, was an energetic presence for Mumbai City FC and it was he who earned a free-kick for them from the right flank in the 21st minute that led to the Karelis' opener.
Van Nieff stepped up on the set-piece and delivered a perfectly dipping curled ball inside the box that met an onrushing Nikolaos Karelis at the centre of the 18-yard area. Karelis thundered the ball into the back of the net through his head, getting the Islanders an important lead in the contest.
In the 40th minute, Yoell van Nieff dazzled ahead from the middle to take a long ranger from distance. The ball landed in the bottom left corner.
In the 55th minute, Armando Sadiku converted a penalty kick to reduce the margin.
