KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan will try to give their stuttering title hunt a push when they host third placed Royal Wahingdoh in an I-League clash scheduled to be played at Barasat on Wednesday evening
The Mariners, who had a healthy lead at the top only a few weeks ago, have now slumped to the second place, courtesy their poor showing in the last couple of matches. The Kolkata giants have lost both of their last couple of encounters and now find themselves three points behind defending champions Bengaluru FC.
The hosts will be missing their key player Debjit Majumder, who has played a major role in the team’s campaign.
“We have spotted a blood clot between his shinbone and knee. He is out of tomorrow’s tie,” Shankarlal Chakraborty, the assistant coach of the team informed the media.
The team will be dependent on the likes of Pierre Boya, Sony Norde and Balwant Singh to score. Boya, the maequee player of the team conceded that a lack of concentration may have resulted in the recent dip in the team’s performance.
Denson Devadas continues to be sidelined with an injury, while Kinshuk Debnath is expected to start in place of Anwar Ali.
Talking about the travellers, Royals are ready to make their Kolkata debut after a long 17-day break. Santosh Kashyap, the coach of the team, will try to end their fairytale journey on a high note against his old club.
“Finishing second or third in our debut season will be a major achievement. We had a long break and we will go for the kill tomorrow,” the coach told the media.
The former ONGC gaffer will have a full squad to choose from unlike his Bagan counterpart.
Seityasen Singh and Jackichand Singh will be at the center of attraction while the likes of Densill Theobald and Kim Song Yong will also be eager to show their class.
With the title challenge seeing new twists on every matchday, it is safe to assume that tomorrow’s match will be a treat for the football lovers.
