KOZHIKODE: Calicut FC edged Thiruvananthapuram Kombans FC 2-1 at the EMS Corporation Stadium, on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in the first semi-final of the Kerala Super League 2024.
In the final, Calicut FC will take on the winners of the second semi-final between Forca Kochi FC and Kannur Warriors FC to be played on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. The final is on November 10.
The first half began with a clear statement from the Kombans, who kicked off the game at a high tempo, eager to secure an early lead. They showed determination in their attacks, pressing Calicut FC’s defence in the opening minutes. However, Calicut FC, under the guidance of Ian Andrew Gillan, soon found their rhythm and began to counter Kombans’ momentum.
Despite Calicut's offensive efforts, Kombans captain Patrick Motta worked tirelessly in the midfield, orchestrating play and attempting to regain control for his team. His efforts paid off when Kombans capitalised on a crucial error in the Calicut box. Defender Richard Agyeman handled the ball inside the box, leading the referee to award a penalty. Kombans’ Autemar Bispo made no mistake, expertly converting from the spot and giving his team a crucial 1-0 lead.
Calicut’s breakthrough came in the 60th minute when substitute striker Kennedy found the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations from the home crowd.
In the 72nd minute, Kennedy nearly doubled his tally with a powerful shot that struck the crossbar. The rebound fell perfectly to Gani Ahmed, who seized the opportunity with a thunderous strike, sending the ball past Kombans’ goalkeeper Michel Americo, a goal that ultimately proved to the match-winner.
