NEW DELHI: Winger Suman Sarkar led the surge with a well earned brace as the AIFF Regional Academy opened their u-19 I-League campaign with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Mumbai FC at the Fr. Angel's Sports Complex.
In what proved to be a fast-paced encounter with action at both ends, clinical finishing by the AIFF youngsters proved to be the key as they recorded their first win of the competition.
After a rocky start, AIFF midfielder Moinuddin Khan broke the deadlock with a well placed header off Amey Ranawade's cross from the right flank. The lead was doubled within a matter of minutes when Suman beat the Mumbai FC keeper in a one-on-one situation and finished with a neat lob.
On to the 36th minute and Mumbai FC went 3-0 down, this time off a header from AIFF's Gursimrat Singh Gill. The opportunistic defender scored from a corner taken by Bidyananda Singh.
The fourth and final goal arrived in the 39th when Suman registered his second of the game. With the keeper off his line, the winger reacted quickest to a rebound and unleashed a thirty-yard strike that sailed into the back of the net.
