NEW DELHI: Two second half goals proved to be the key as the AIFF Regional Academy recorded their fifth consecutive win on the trot in a 2-0 result against Mumbai FC in Round 5 encounter of the Under-19 I-League at the Goans Sports Ground, Churchgate.
Following an uneventful first half, the deadlock was broken in the 52nd minute when midfielder Moinuddin Khan combined well with Milan Basumatary and unleashed a powerful half-volley that cannoned into the roof of the net to make it 1-0 for the Academy outfit.
On to the 65th minute and it was Milan’s turn to get on the scoresheet, tapping home off a rebound from close after the opposition goalkeeper failed to clear Suman Sarkar’s powerful shot inside the penalty area.
The win consolidates the AIFF Regional Academy’s position at the top of the leader-board with fifteen points from five games while Mumbai FC find themselves languishing in third place with six points.
With three rounds of games remaining in the competition and only one team qualifying for the next round, the onus is now on the AIFF Regional Academy to preserve their lead and keep the pressure on the chasing pack.
