NEW DELHI: Mr. Ajit Singh, Minister for Sports, Assam inaugurated the first round of the final phase of the 2nd Division League at the SN Dev Stadium in Silchar on Sunday (March 23). Besides, Mr. Ankur Datta, Vice Chairman, Airtel I-League; Mr. Badal Dey, President, Silchar District Sports Association; Mr. Babul Hore, General Secretary, Silchar District Sports Association and Colonel Raminder Chimai, Commandant NCC Group, Silchar, were also present.
Two matches were played on the inaugural day. While Sangbad Pratidin Bhawanipore FC defeated Kalighat Milan Sangha FC 2-1; Royal Wahingdoh scraped past URO United Sikkim Football Club by a solitary goal in the other kickoff. Hindustan FC, Delhi stay the other Team in the fray as the winners earn a ticket to the next edition of I-League.
The first round of the 2nd Division final round is being played in Silchar from March 23 to 31, 2014. The action then shifts to Aizawl for the return-leg of the final round which kicks-off on April 3. (For complete details click on www.i-league.org)
Dutta, also an Executive Committee Member of All India Football Federation thanked AIFF for their “support and positive attitude.”
“I am happy to organise the 2nd Division League in Silchar which is famous for its hospitality and infrastructure. We are hosting two matches in a day. The kick-off of the first match is at 3pm while the second match is being played under the floodlights from 5.30pm,” he told www.the-aiff.com.
“The SN Dev Stadium boasts of floodlight facilities with a capacity of 2000 lux,” he further informed.
“It is a very positive initiative by AIFF to promote the 2nd Division League. The first day’s matches depicted the quality and intensity of the Tournament. I wish success to all,” Dutta stated.
The Vice Chairman of the Airtel I-League also made a mention of the “competitive nature” of the Premier Division.
“The Airtel I-League is standing at a very delicate position at the moment. You just cannot choose a clear cut winner. Every day there is some surprise or the other. The League just couldn’t have been more competitive.”
